How to track traffic from short videos
October 25, 2026
A million views can bring zero sales, and a modest channel can bring customers every day. You only see the difference if you track the whole funnel.
A five-step funnel
- Views: how many times the video was shown.
- Engagement: likes, comments, shares.
- Clicks: how many people tapped the link.
- Sign-ups: how many left a contact, subscribed or created an account.
- Sales: how many paid and how much money that brought.
Formulas
- ER = (likes + comments + shares) ÷ views. Shows whether the delivery grabs people.
- CTR = clicks ÷ views. Whether the call to click works.
- CR = sign-ups ÷ clicks. Whether your page convinces.
- EPC = revenue ÷ clicks. How much one click earns.
- CPL = cost ÷ sign-ups. What one lead costs.
- ROI = (revenue − cost) ÷ cost. Whether the traffic pays off.
Example calculation
Example numbers, to illustrate the formulas.
- In a month: 200,000 views, 1,600 clicks, 120 sign-ups, 18 sales at $40.
- CTR = 1,600 ÷ 200,000 = 0.8%.
- CR = 120 ÷ 1,600 = 7.5%.
- Revenue = 18 × $40 = $720. EPC = $720 ÷ 1,600 = $0.45.
- If traffic cost $500, ROI = ($720 − $500) ÷ $500 = 44%.
These numbers tell you where to look next. Low CTR: rework the call to action in the video and profile. Low CR: improve the page the link leads to. Run your own numbers in the ROI calculator.
How to tie a sign-up to a video
Every platform counts views, but sign-ups happen on your site. To connect the two you need two things:
- A separate link for every channel with a click_id tag that goes to your site in the URL.
- A postback: when someone signs up or pays, your site or tracker sends the click_id back to the tracking system.
Then every sign-up is tied to a channel, and you see which channels and deliveries bring money. In the Traffic Howl dashboard this works out of the box: links, postbacks and a full-funnel report. To build a link with UTM tags and click_id yourself, use the UTM link builder.
Common mistakes
- Counting views and followers as success without clicks.
- One link for all channels: you can't tell who brought the people.
- Drawing conclusions from one day. Recommendations swing, so look at a week at least.
